So a few months ago (actually I think it was in April so that is like 4 months ago. Sheesh! Where does the time go?) I signed my mom and I up for this Dirty Girl Mud Run. It was her mother’s day present from me. She’s always like “Don’t get me anything. I don’t need anything! blah blah blah” so I decided I would get her an experience! My friend Pogs actually found this run and really wanted to do it and I thought “I could probably stand to do some running” so that’s how this happened.
I wrote a post back when I first signed us up for it about starting this whole running business and I’m happy to say that I did stick with the whole Couch25K thing. Well pretty much. I mean it got so frickin’ frackin’ hot for the first three weeks of July that I may have taken a break but seriously I am not committed to exercise enough to either die of heatstroke or be able to slip and slide my way home solely on my own sweat. I don’t want it that bad. So the day arrived last weekend and we were READY! My mom made us these cute t-shirts and then we Pinterest-ed them up (this just really means we artfully cut them – no sewing skills peeps!). Our team name was Mama Liz & the Chicklets in case you were wondering…
The day was pretty perfect for it since it was overcast, looked like rain, but wasn’t humid. Score! We were in one of the morning heats which was a blessing because I can’t imagine how muddy the track would have been after like 4000 people ran on it. They said there were 5300 participants total which is crazy to me. That’s a shitload of people! I would say that I ran for about 3/4 of the way. Between the obstacles it was sometimes incredibly muddy and rough ground so it was a little scary to contemplate running. Like I said, I’m supportive of this exercise thing but not enough to twist an ankle or whatever. I think my favorite obstacle was either the wall climb or the cargo net – after I climbed over the wall I screamed encouragement at my teammates and was reminded of a little old movie called An Officer and a Gentleman, ever seen it? Okay I just googled hardcore for like 15 minutes trying to find a screencap of the part where Richard Gere helps his female compatriot over the wall after the mean drill sergeant screams at her and tells her she’s a failure but I couldn’t find it. Internet you have failed me. We can just look at this instead:
He was a stone cold fox, there’s no denying it. Although I have always thought he was pretty damn lucky she took him back in the end. He’s pretty much an asshole (and so NOT a gentleman!) in the movie. Anyways, back to this run business.
If you think it looks fun to get super dirty, it was! They do these runs all over the country I guess so go to the website and see if there’s one near you. It costs $75 but it goes to breast cancer research and you get a cool t-shirt
I’ve decided I’m going to look up another 5k to sign up for in the coming months so that I actually keep running because left to my own devices I would probably just…..not do that. Check out how clean we were to begin with:
And just in conclusion, isn’t my mom the cutest? She’s the Mama Chick in the middle!
